Quebec City, QB CPWire-LLK-FrenchVote 03Nov
Canada 0, USA 2 – Today Quebec voted strongly in favour of becoming the 52nd United State. Voter turnout was high for a referendum vote in the province. There was no doubt about this vote. From the Gaspe to the shores of the St. Lawrence River – from the Northern mining towns to the southern farms along the border, from the eastern townships next to New Brunswick to the western towns next to Ontario, the majority voted Yes. They voted yes in large metropolitan areas, and small towns and villages.
Voter turnout was about 65%, Yes vote to join the U.S. was about 2,628,000, the No vote was about 872,000.
From the street, the common folks, the sentiment was universal. They said they saw the handwriting on the wall. When Saskatchewan left, Quebeckers decided that was proof enough for them. They did not want to stick around and watch idly by while others fell along the wayside. Quebeckers, known for their political savvy and instincts, chose to go now, to indicate strong support and a firm resolve to not remain in Canada. The strong resource and energy producing base, along with heavy automobile, aerospace, and parts manufacturing bodes well for their added value to the U.S. economic base. The historic friendliness towards people of French ancestry in the Northeast U.S. and especially in New Orleans and around Louisiana also added to the positive feeling that Quebeckers had expressed in their bold move to becoming U.S. citizens. Vive Le Quebec, U.S.A. Libre!!!

Regina, SK CPWire-LLK-Sask Becomes 51st 03Nov
There were parties in the streets today as the former Deputy-Premier, Martin Williams, was sworn in as the first Governor of the State of Saskatchewan. Celebrations, American Flags went up all over town, hanging out of apartment windows, downtown office buildings, and draped over awnings and railings along city streets. Little American Flags were flying from auto aerials from one end of town to the other. Some folks were even singing the U.S. National Anthem, and America the Beautiful. The former Premier, George Balderson, has retired from public life, and was not part of the celebrations.
